Is it necessary to put my dog on heartworm prevention meds?

October 5th, 2009

I’m planning to get my first dog & don’t know alot about heartworms. I currently live in Florida & she will be a indoor/outdoor dog. Is it necessary to put the dog on heartworm prevention meds or should I just have her checked yearly? Most people I’ve known with dogs don’t have their dogs on the meds, so I’m wondering if its even worth it. Also, are Huskys anymore suseptible to heartworms than other type of dogs?

The question was answered by :
krissy112002 :

Any dog is suseptible to heartworm and yes you should have your dog on a heartworm preventative. If your dog gets heartworm, they will have to undergo aggressive treatment that will be very painful and will have to be seperated from contact with other animals and humans. It is a lot easier to prevent than it is to treat.

My dog is limping what should i do to ease the pain?

September 27th, 2009

what should i do other than go to the vet to ease the pain. My dog started limping yesterday and she wont stop what should i do please help.

The answer is provided by :
Bosco :

well see if you can feel any breaks in the leg (it should be obvious) check between the pads to make sure there are no mats/growths/random things in it.
check for sores on the leg..if nothing comes up wait a few days and if the dog is still on 3 legs call the vet.
nothing you can do to ease the pain..sometimes dogs will just limp for a while…
they may have pulled a muicle or something and there is not pain meds for that hha…dogs take pain pretty well so they should be fine as long as they stop limpining in a day or two. good luck

I need advice from dog owners who have experienced heartworm treatment with their dog?

September 26th, 2009

What does treatment consist of?
How long does treatment last?
What signs and symptoms does a dog exhibit during treatment?
Can a dog die during heartworm treatment?
What necessary precautions must be taken when caring for a dog that is undergoing treatment?

The answer is provided by :
Amanda W :

The treatment consists of a series of injections over a few days or a couple of months.

Dogs are often tired. Some of this may be from pain meds given during treatment. It is really hard on their bodies, though. They usually feel at least a little off.

Dogs can die during heartworm treatment. I’ve only seen it happen twice. They were rescue dogs that were not in peak condition otherwise and they had been heartworm positive for years by all evidence. There’s a risk, but the risks of leaving them infected are definitely higher.

You should keep your dog quiet. Very little exercise for the entire time they are being treated. Make sure they’re eating and they’re breathing ok and not coughing. Those can be signs that something is wrong. If that happens, contact your vet.

One of my dogs had to go through treatment shortly after I got him. He did fine with it and is doing fine now. It’s a serious thing, though and shouldn’t be taken lightly. I hope I’ve helped and I hope your dog does well.

Allergy development to Adequan?

September 14th, 2009

I have a 5 y.o. 1/2 TB mare who has some spurring on both front sesamoid bones that causes joint inflammation and discomfort when consistently worked.

The equine specialist that diagnosed her recommended placing her on a wedge shoe and starting her on Adequan injections. My "regular" vet is ok with the wedge shoe but feels I should start the mare on an oral joint supplement like Grand Flex, Figuerola’s Joint Saver, etc. instead of the injectable Adequan. If, and only if, the oral supplements don’t work, then she would recommend going with the Adequan.

She tells me that vets are finding now that horses are developing allergies to the proteins in Adequan. From what she said, these are horses that had taken Adequan without prior issue for multiple years.

Has anyone else heard of allergy development related to long-term Adequan administration?
*I* am not having allergic issues. The question was related to reports of HORSES developing an allergy to the medication, Adequan, when given to them consistently over a multiple year period.
I know that animals, people, etc. can develop allergies at any time - even to medicines they’ve taken or foods they’ve eaten before. The reason I asked the question is that my vet led me to believe that there was an inordinate number of late-term allergic reactions now being reported. A small percentage is to be expected, but the vet insinuated that it was a growing and significant problem that might indicate we shouldn’t go that route.

The question was answered by :

We have a few horses on Adequan, and have never, ever had a problem with it (and this is like 10+ years).

I would ask a different vet about giving a combination of Adequan/Legend. We’ve found it works wonders for those horses needing a little extra help.

Can I give two doses of heartworm pill to my dog in one month?

September 14th, 2009

I gave my dog his regular dose of the heartworm medication earlier this month. We just bought a pill that’s used both for heartworm and fleas. He has a lot of fleas and we would like to start the medication immediately but am not sure if I can give him more than one prescribed dose of the medicine in one month.

What age is too old or too young to begin giving my puppy heartworm medication?

September 14th, 2009

I have a Pug puppy who is about 7 months old. She has shots but I want to begin giving her preventative heartworm medication as soon as possible, but I heard something about having to do it before a certain age… Is that true? I think someone told me that I need to start it by 6 months of age… Will it be just as effective if I start now? I’m hoping it’s not true about needing to get it before 6 months… I’m just wondering what the facts are.
Thanks!

The following reply is by : Chigirl *Love A Chihuahua* :
FACT- you can still start the dog on Heart worm preventative like Interceptor monthly. BUT….you need to take the dog to the VET first & have a Heart worm test done, to make sure your dog doesn’t already have adult heart worms, if your dog does, then giving a preventative instead of treatment can actually be very harmful to your dog.

You need to talk with your Veterinarian about a heart worm test & then starting the dog on a monthly preventative.

Rogue Bullies-your VET may have something different.
My VET however requires a test before the preventative. My VET doesn’t even carry heart-guard!!!
So NO I’m not wrong, you are just being an idiot.

What Can I Give My Dog For Pain Other Than Bufferin?

September 8th, 2009

My Dog Hurt Her Leg And We Dont Know How. What Kind Of Pain Medication Can I Give her Other Than Bufferin?

The answer is provided by :
postalbb :

You need to see a vet. You can try a baby aspirin for a dog, but nothing with tylenol, and only a baby aspirin until morning when you can call the vet. The dog needs medicine for a dog. Metacam and Tramadol are the best. Rimadyl is also given, but it damages the liver and kidneys and is not recommended by internal medicine doctors because of that side effect. Depending on the type of injury, you could try putting a cool pack on the injury for a few minutes and keeping the dog immobile. If it is something serious, you may need to go to the emergency vet tonight.

How expensive are monthly Adequan shots for horse's joints?

September 7th, 2009

This is was answered by :
AmandaL :

Around here, Adequan is $45 a bottle (one shot). Legend is $90. It’s not cheap, but it works. Our vet recommends using Adequan every week for the first month and Legend every other week for the first month then going down from there.
