Can the pet medication, Sentinel for dogs be used on cats?

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

I'm out of my cat's medication, but I have the same med for my dogs handy. Thanks

Never use a dog product on a cat. Cats are more sensitive to things and because they lick themselves can ingest toxic amounts of whatever is in there.

When I pet my new dog a 1 yr. old, black, female, pug) I will get little red bumps on me that itch. What is it?

She is currently on frontline and sentinel, so I don’t think it is fleas, can it be an allergy or other mite? Or what?
Thank you for all of your great answers. I think I am allergic.

An allergy of some sort but to make sure it’s not fleas fill a cup or shallow dish with water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid and place that on the floor in a common area where the dog spends a good deal of time and put a light over it. If it’s fleas they will be attracted by the light into the water and will drown. Otherwise you’re having a reaction to something you are using on the dog or something she is getting into maybe. Oh and btw I love pugs are they the best?!

what tests are normally done after melanoma is diagnosed?

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma about a mth and a half ago, my dermatologist recommended that I see an oncologist to have some blood work and a chest x ray done. The oncologist has done the blood work and chest x ray, and thursday i am having a sentinel node biopsy done, the doc is also recommending a pet scan be done. what are they looking for, did some of my labs come back abnormal, or are the docs being safe? I have read several articles about snb and pet scan, just wanted to see if i could get some more info…..thanks

All of the tests you mentioned are routinely done for people who are diagnosed with melanoma. The doctors are being safe. They are going to look at everything to make sure the melanoma has not spread (that is what the lymph node biopsy and the PET scan are for). The doctors will probably want you to get blood tests and chest x-rays on a routine basis for several years. Do not hesitate to ask them any questions - make a list if you have to. You can call them about your lab results and ask if they are normal. It may put your mind at ease.

What is the safest flea killer medicine for cats?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

I read that insect growth regulators (IGR's) are safer to use, but elsewhere I read that Bio Spot, which contains and IGR (nylar) has caused injurious even fatal results in pets.

I'm thinking of using revolution or program and capstar.

Also read about precor and sentinel. It's all confusing.

p.S. I wanted to ask people's opinions and experiences, in addition I will consult with a vet of course (I know they usually prescribe Revolution).

Program and Capstar are great. Program is the form of Sentinel thats for cats. Sentinel is for dogs. Revolution and Frontline work too. The only difference is Frontline and Revolution kill them, and Program serilizes them. You could use Frontline or Revolution along with Program, and that would kill the fleas, and prevent future infestations. Capstar is for if the animal is infested, it will kill all the fleas on them at that time, but doesnt do anything for their environment, and the fleas will usually just come back if theyre in the house, on the other pets, etc. If you dont have a flea problem right now, just looking for a preventative, try Revolution or Fronltine. And yes it is all very confusing :-)

Puppy?????????!!?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

My vet gave me 1 Sentinel pill in a container that says Give 1 tablet once monthly.
Do they sell Sentinel in pet shops or something or am i going to have to pay for a vet appointment every month?

You will probably need to get the puppy weighed every month at the vet—not an actual appointment and they shouldn't charge you for it.

Sentinel dosage varies by weight and they will need to make sure your puppy gets the proper dosage as he grows.
