Can someone please help me out here.
I took our puppy boy (1 year old StaffyX) to get de sexed at the vet this morning and while I was there they told me I should get him heart worm tested and that they would also give me Sentinel tablet for everything else. I agreed to all this because, after all, the vets are there for the best interests of the pets, right?!
So I called the boyfriend and told him it would cost a little extra due to the test and tablet and he blew up! He asks…what is the point of the test if we’re just going to give him the tablet anyway? I tried to explain that the tablet is a preventative measure only and if he does have heart worm then more meds will be needed but he says that one or the other is incorrect, either the meds do their job or the test is a money grab.
The Sentinel is a preventative only, right?
So we test for heart worm to make sure the preventative is safe to give straight away, because if we give a preventative and he already has heart worm we can do more harm than good, right?
I’m sorry if this makes no sense, feel free to ask me to clarify anything.
This is was answered by :
Rotten Rotts Common sense is a good thing. Try it : The test has to be done to determine if the dog is heart worm positive since the preventive can be dangerous in a infected dog. Yes the sentinel is a preventative
Just tell his to get over himself, this is far cheaper than having to treat a positive dog which takes months is very expensive and is extremely dangerous since the treatment is arsenic.

Okay, thanks to those of you who have answered my last question concerning Heartguard and Frontline.
I’m roaming around on the 1-800-Pet meds website right now, and I’m seeing a lot of different meds… Like Interceptor and Sentinel, which work against both fleas, ticks, and worms. So my question here is, would it be good to use something like Sentinel with Frontline, or would it be okay to use Sentinel alone, or would using both Interceptor and Sentinel (which are both chewable, prevent and fight against worms, but only Sentinel prevents flea eggs from developing).
I’m sort of thinking of using Sentinel alone or maybe with a topical flea thing like Frontline Plus. I’m gonna go walk to my vet in a bit and buy something, so I’d like to know which is better (and yeah, I’ll be speaking to the vet about this, I just like having a lot of opinions).
Thanks for all your help, guys.
The following reply is by : Jeanne : I use Advantage Multi on my dogs. It guards against fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites (worms) and heartworm with a single monthly application. They are healthy, happy and pest/parasite free.

My dog sleeps in my bed with me, as well as on the couch, and although she just began a Sentinel regimen, I notice she scratches a lot and I also found a flea on the side of my face when I was laying in bed yesterday. I have DE FLEA by natural chemistry, which it says can be used on pet bedding, but can it be used on people bedding too? What about the couch? Thank you for your time.
The question was answered by :
JAG : It is not so much the fleas you have to worry about it it is the flea eggs. These cannot be seen by your eye and will hatch for years to come and keep flea infestations coming back.
Take all your bedding and wash in hot water and dry on high heat as previously mentioned. Spray the bed. Wash all your clothing and pajamas in hot. Repeat this every few days as while the fleas are dying off, more eggs (thousands) are being laid.
As far as the carpet – I would actually call a professional to come and carpet clean. Be sure to tell them about the fleas as they can specially treat for that.

I have had a mini australian shep for 1 week. The past 3 days he has been acting weird. 1st day he nipped at someone when they tried to pet his head. 2nd day he would yelp if you would try to pet him in certain areas. 3rd day (today) he snips at me if I pick him up or try to pet him (extremely gently) on any part of his body. He just jumps as if he is being shocked when touched. He is running around and playing fine. I gave him a bath this a.m. to make sure he didn’t have any ticks or something on him. He was seen 5 days ago by a vet and did have parasite that he is on meds for. I have given him children’s benadryl (advice from a vet that he may be having a side effect from the meds) and that is not helping. He is also on the med Sentinel for heart worm prev. and fleas. Please any clues as to what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated! I am going to take him the vet again, but they do not seem to have any clue what could be wrong besides an adverse reaction to the medication for the parasite. Thank you!
The best answer is by :
lu : You need to examine him all over. It sound like he has pain some where. Gently touch and move his joints and his legs. touch his tummy… press gently on his tummy and all parts and see his reaction. He might be hurting somewhere be careful dont get bit.

Nothing will spoil a midnight bike ride like an angry reptile hell bent on taking over the world. Wellington Guzman A South Florida man recently was biking near Everglades National Park when a massive snake making its way into the marshlands blocked his path. Wellington Guzman grabbed the snake by the tail and held on for nearly on hour while he waited for the animal cops to arrive.
“I just wasn’t prepared to find a snake this size,” Guzman said. “My hands were numb from holding it.”
Snakes have always been a fear for people visiting the Everglades, but now they are becoming a big problem.
We mean man-eating big. And if the snakes aren’t stopped, wildlife officials think the reptiles could take over the world (do snakes have an evil laugh? MUHAHAHAHAHA)
"It may be too late to stop the invasion of the Everglades," said Beth Preiss of The Humane Society of the United States to the Sun-Sentinel. "But it’s not too late to stop it in the rest of the country."
Everglades officials have said an influx of exotic snakes, most notably Burmese pythons, are slithering roughshod over the Glades and threaten to upset the eco-system’s natural balance. Cue “Circle of Life” music.
State legislators want to ban the import of the exotic species, but pet storeowners aren’t having that. And while the two sides duke it out in meeting rooms, the pythons are expanding their territory and have been found as far south as the Keys.
The Burmese pythons, which are natives of – you guessed it – Burma and other nearby Southeast Asian countries, really aren’t at fault. It’s their irresponsible owners, who buy the snakes on the cheap as cool looking pets but soon realize they grow too large to feed, unless you plan on sacrificing the family dog or the neighbor’s kid. The snakes can grow to over 20 feet long and can weigh more than 250 pounds.
So most of the snakes are released into the wild, left to do what they were born to do – kill their way to the top of the food chain. That means alligators, crocodiles and other predators are left to battle a new, formidable enemy that has the capability of eating them. Talk about an unwanted houseguest.
This is was answered by :
inatizzie48 : Well lets see. Pythons / Obama====== Obama / Pythons Now I see! They’re both snakes in the grass.

The best answer is by :
Deej : I think $7 is a decent price. I probably wouldn’t go any lower than $5. The only one I would charge more for is The Smallville Season 1. Since it’s an entire season of a tv show, I’d probably do $15 to start and maybe take $10 minimum. Good luck.

To those who move on and leave their cats behind … if you find it is easy to convince yourself … ‘it’s an animal, it’ll be fine’ … remember, that’s frequently NOT the case. I just received this from another animal lover and thought i’d share …
As you may recall we have many "pets left behind" here at our apartments and many of them are cats roaming around that I and other residents leave food and water out for.. Even though it pains my heart to see these kitties living outside there is only so much pain I can take over it.. On the weekend of Memorial Day around 8:00 on that Sunday I took my dog out for his first walk of the day and spotted the beautiful gray DSH kitty that I feed on occasion near and almost under a parked car.. I stopped short and looked and got a bad feeling so I made some noises in an attempt to get him/her to stir but to no avail and I got hysterical.. I brought my dog back in the house and called me neighbor who brought down a towel to cover this little kitty since I was frozen in time .. I could not leave this kitty to lay there and have no humility or dignity in death so I called animal control off hours number but they wouldn’t come out on an animal that wasn’t alive.. I called our complex’s off hours emergency number and reluctantly they sent someone out to assistant me and they told me that I might want to look away while they picked up the kitty.. I thanked them and went back to my apartment still crying for this kitty that I thought got hit by a car since they like to sleep under the cars and that always makes me nervous.. A little while later during the day I ran into another one of my neighbors that told me that the maintenance man said that judging from what he saw around the cat he felt that the cats death was intentional and not accidental I told my neighbor not to tell me anything else because I was truly upset over the entire thing.. I am still having a problem with it and I’m concerned about the other kitties that are allowed by their owners here to wander around loose and those kitties that have no longer have owners.. Since that day I have seen a police presence patrolling the complex in the morning and during the day which I never noticed before not sure though if the two are connected.. Sad sad sad and sorrow for this little one that was left behind by someone like a piece of garbage.. This kitty at one time gave his/her love and affection to a family that turned their back on it when they moved and that is a big problem with me and this state and it is the younger people not the older people that do it.. People that intentionally kill animals have deeper problems that have not surfaced yet but to kill a defenseless animal is truly sick..
This article is from the Broward County newspapers about a problem they are having with this same issue.. Http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/sfl-serial-cat-killings-bn061109,0,4603752.story
Not meaning to put a damper on anyone’s day but can we please finally agree ALL these babies need our help … regardless of the heartless humans who dealt them this hand, WE hold the Aces, let’s use them, ppl !!
Please teach yourselves and your children, better
granny Mouse
This is was answered by :
you'retheonlyone; : that is horrible!
only someone heartless could do that.
but really, if you do that, how are you NOT a killer?
i’m more frustrated that people can’t be jailed for something like this.. just because it looks accidental.
the only thing i could think of is that people get tired of the animal?
it’s just like having a baby.. so do they get tired of their children?

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March…because of the idiot surgeon (yes, he was an idiot which is why I switched Doctors)..I finally got the bone scan that I should have had done in March completed last week. The question that I have is this: Does cancer usually stay in the general area if it starts to spread, or can it jump around?
They say that there is an area of concern on my spine, so I am having an MRI. How worried should I be that it may have spread based on my having a wedge shaped vertebra in the same area that they are concerned with? Could that be a reason for abnormal growth in the area?
My PET scan came back perfect as did all the other tests that I have which stated that there was no evidence of spreading. I had numerous MRIs done of the breast, a chest xray, blood tests looking for markers. Although they did not do a sentinel node biopsy to see if it had spread. They were going to do the biopsy when they were going to do the surgery removing the lump.
This is was answered by :
Denisedds : I don’t understand what you mean by “Does cancer usually stay in the general area if it starts to spread, or can it jump around?”
Cancer spreads either through your lymph nodes or your bloodstream. Breast cancers nearly always will spread to the axillary nodes first, but every once in awhile you will see one that didn’t. Once the cancer cells are circulating in your body they can start a new tumor anywhere.
There is nothing better than a bone scan to pick up bone mets and this is a common metastatic site for breast cancer. However, if they want an MRI they are not concerned about your bones as this is used to look at soft tissue. Without the radiologists reports I have no way of knowing what is happening. Scoliosis does not throw off a bone scan. The scan itself doesn’t look for anything it’s just taking a picture. It’s the radiologist that determines if there is anything there.

specifically flea and tick prevention and heartworm meds
I asked a somewhat related question earlier
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Atmm1.0R0XONFMQtiotB28bsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090514110005AAGzgpG
I was hoping to start buying my stuff from 1800petmeds because they're the cheapest I've found so far. My vet is making that impossible to do though as they refuse to write rx and make you buy the meds directly from them (that's what my last question was regarding). I know I can get Sentinel for much cheaper online than at my vets office. Is 1800petmeds a good company?
Side note: My dog is 12 weeks old. Vet has not done heartworm test on her yet but gave me a sample of heartworm meds which I started last month. Now I need to get some more. I do not have a problem with taking the dog to the vet to check for heartworms, I asked them about it and they said they won't test her yet since she's under 6 months old. I guess some people misunderstood me last time and thought that I wasn't wanting to take my dog in to get checked for heartworms.
The following reply is by : Snickd : I get all of my dog's meds at our vet and they actually charge exactly the same as 1800petmeds, so I've never asked about prescriptions. However, if you feel that your vet is money grubbing, I'd find a new vet that you can be completely comfortable with. Speaking from experience, I've been to every vet within 35 miles of my home trying to find a decent one before I found the vet I use now. One vet nearly killed my dog when they botched his neuter, and the other vet was so intent on selling me crap that I didn't need ("What, you already have Frontline at home and don't need any more? Well, I think you do. So here you go!") that he didn't actually do anything for my dog. Just keep moving around until you find someone that you're comfortable with because it'll make a difference when you're comfy enough to approach the vet with any questions and believe them, rather than wonder if they're simply suggesting meds to get extra money from you.
