K9 Advantix or Frontline ?

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

So if you own a dog chances are you have made the mistake and bought the cheap stuff from the pet store just to go camping and find a flea or tick let alone just being outside with misqitos, what does everyone think about the two big names in Flea meds ?
other than the fact that your basicly puting a Nerotoxin on you dogs spine
But its not like anything else works as good or even close to as good. At least that I have come across.

I use Frontline, have done for a few years now and not had a flea or tick problem since.
I had tried all the store bought ones, what a waste of money!

Flea treatment for nursing dog…????

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

I have always used K9 advantix on my dog, but she got pregnant and i had to stop using it (says on the box not to use on pregnant/nursing dogs). She had the puppy 3 weeks ago, and since she's nursing i still can't treat her. (Now the puppy has them to, and can't be treated for at least another 5 weeks). Is there any natural products to use or home remedies, i've tried washing the pet bed and all sheets and fabrics where they could lay their eggs, but it isn't working and I feel awful, any other solutions, what else can i do???

The following reply is by : chihuahuamom :
Ask a vet if they have any thing safe to use but the safest thing since the pups are so young is use a flea comb and comb them out if you place the flea in alcohol it will kill it

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

hi,

i am from india,

i recently bought K9 ADVANTIx from USA (EPA APPROVED)
my dog comes under the category 11 - 20 LBS, its 5 Month old Female Doberman,
in what i received from USA, it states the following

"ALL ADVANTIX HAS THE SAME INGREDIENTS. ADVANTIX FOR EXTRA-LARGE DOGS HAS 4.0 ML PER DOSE AND ADVANTIX FOR DOGS 11-20 LBS HAS 1.0 ML PER DOSE. SO, YOU CAN GET 4 DOSES FOR YOUR DOG 11-20 LBS FROM THE 4.0 ML EXTRA-LARGE DOG TUBE.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOUR PET RECEIVES THE CORRECT DOSAGE FOR IT'S WEIGHT AND THIS KIT PROVIDES YOU WITH THE TOOLS TO EASILY ADMINISTER YOUR MONTHLY APPLICATION.
THIS KIT INCLUDES:
ONE EXTRA-LARGE (4.0 ML) ADVANTIX TUBE, EPA APPROVED AND REGISTERED FOR SALE IN THE U.S.A. NEW, STILL FACTORY SEALED IN THE ORIGINAL FOIL PACKAGING.
A 2 DRAM VIAL WITH AIRTIGHT CAP
A REUSEABLE PIPETTE, MARKED WITH FILL LINE FOR EXACT DOSAGE

what i want to know is if i can use it as written dividing the 4ml into 4 times and use it on my 11-22lbs pet for 4 mn

That sounds little strange. you need to take the product to your vet. Usually the Advantix is packaged by weight, not something that you should "dose out" on your own

What are these scabs on my dogs skin?

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

He is a 70 pound pitbull mix and only this summer while brushing him or petting him- i keep finding these large(in height not width) black scabs yet if you pull them off there is just a red area underneath, no blood, puss or any sort of infection. Why does he keep getting these seemingly out of nowhere? so far he has gotten three, one between his shoulder blades, one almost the same spot but further down the back, and another in the middle of the back on near the spine. He is a little over 1 and a half years old and has a shiny, red/tan coat which sheds a bunch but has never had scabs. He has also always itched ALOT, never breaking the skin but biting and itching everywhere. I also treat him monthly with K9 Advantix so it shouldn't be anything like that as he is mostly an inside dog.

The question was answered by :
justin_in_time :

Ok well he may be getting these things called "hot spots". They are very annoying to a dog and they are somewhat nasty to look at. If you take him tot he vet he/she will give him this special cream for the "hot spots". If not then get ice, wrap it in a towel, and then you just put it over the spots for about 5 minutes each. I hope everything turn out all right.

Use regular shampoo and leave it on him for five minutes while brushing him, then rinse him well in clear water. It will kill the fleas. You do not want to use more flea killer on him this soon. It could make him sick.

k9 advantix???

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

How long untill you can pet your dog after you have applied the medicine? Also can you tell me about your own experinces with it. (Can you include a source for the first question?) Thank you!

wizzards_23 :

Once it dries, it's fine. This product is pretty good. Works as well as others that are given by a Vet.
The source for the first question should be on the enclosed material or the box .

We found this weird thing on my dog? What is it? Help!?

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

I was petting my dog and I felt a bump. At first I thought that it was just a piece of matted fur so i squeezed it for a second and checked to see if I could untangle it but I couldn't. So I looked closer and I saw this weird thing like just a little smaller than a dime and it was tan colored. There was black stuff leaking out of it. We got all of it off. It did NOT look like a tic - but it might be one I don't know. But then when we took it off there was a huge cut and black stuff ALL OVER where the bug had been. We are taking him to the vet ASAP but we are scared for him and worried about him. We DO give him K9 Advantix and he was not overdue for it. I have no idea what it is. Is he going to be ok? I am REALLY worried. We live right around the base of a mountain but it isn't really woody at all. There are a few trees in our backyard but nothing especially wooded or unusual.

It sounds like a tick. Ticks are usually a brownish color before they are engorged with blood, the black stuff you saw might have been blood, it turns a darker color when it comes in contact with air. The fact that you live at the base of a mountain makes me think even more that this could have been a tick. Is your dog protected against Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever? These are two diseases that are transmitted to dogs from ticks and both can be really bad for your dog. Symptoms of Lyme disease in dogs may be different in each and every dog. That’s why each dog owner has to be knowledgeable about and on the lookout for a range of symptoms of Lyme disease that may include limping, usually one of its front legs, fever as high as 105 degrees, fatigue, appetite loss, and signs of discomfort or pain. There are two stages of Rocky Mountain spotted fever: Subclinical and acute. In the subclinical stage, dogs are infected, but do not show outward signs of the disease though they may have laboratory test abnormalities. These dogs may recover quickly. In the acute stage, dogs have a loss of appetite, fever, pain in the muscles and joints, swollen lymph nodes, and edema (fluid accumulation) in the face and legs. Some animals develop pneumonia or heart arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden death. Most dogs have neurological signs (dizziness, depression, stupor, seizures) and these can sometimes become very severe. These signs appear 2 to 14 days after the tick bite. The dogs may have slight anemia, a low number of platelets (platelets help blood to clot), and increased liver enzymes, as measured by a blood chemistry panel. Some dogs develop ulcerations of the mucous membranes and extremities. Since you are taking your dog to the vet save the part of the bug or whatever in a ziploc bag to show your vet. Also try and keep the cut clean and free of hair to prevent infection. Its really hard to tell for sure if its a tick or not without a picture, but I hope this helps.

Has anyone ever tried Cutter flea medication?

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

I went to the pet store today and they do not carry Frontline anymore. So they advised me to get Cutter. It is a 5 in 1 medication. Has anyone tried this before? K9 Advantix never worked so I am afraid of new things for my lil dog. Thanks

The answer is provided by :

I'm not sure about cutter…if it's over the counter I wouldn't recommend it. You should get frontline elsewhere, if they don't carry it anymore.

Flea and tick repellants for dogs???

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

I have been using Frontline and K9 Advantix for the past couple years. It hasn't gotten cold enough to kill the fleas here this season and the cost of buying this stuff for 2 dogs is getting expensive. Does anyone know of any cheaper brands that actually work? I've heard Heartz brand doesn't work at all and I've also heard that Zodiac works, but I am reluctant to try it because of the price. Do the cheap ones you get at pet stores actually work?
We have tried the garlic and it makes them stink, so we don't really like it….thanks anyways
I love how everyone assumes stuff….I simply wanted to know what flea stuff works best and I got a lot of repsonses about how I need to use heartworm stuff and I should've thought about the price before I got 2 dogs etc etc….I just wanted to know any alternatives to the main name brands….thanks to all of you who actually answered my question and didn't go on rambling about stuff I didn't care to know about!
My vet charges $49.99 for a 3 month supply of Frontline…..with 2 dogs, shelling out $100 for flea protection is kind of a lot, especially when you have 2 dogs, 2 cats and 3 horses…..thanks for everyone who gave some economical solutions!

We have had problems with fleas , and he have used the advantix and it works . But if you don't get them outside also then it don't help. We use seven dust also and you can put it on your dogs and we put it under the deck outside and also in the yard it wont kill your grass or anything and we have had good luck with that … good luck getting rid of yours

Where is a cheap and good place to buy pet medications?

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

I need K9 advantix and heart worm prevention tabs. There are so many internet sites, which one do you recommend?

The best answer is by :

I prefer entirelypets.com I bought k-9 Advantix, sentinal and some other misc supplies from here. They have the best prices on pet meds that I have found. Petmeds.com is higher than most sites I found. i don't see how they say they are the cheapest. i did a yahoo search for discount pet medications and this is how i found the fore metioned site. there shipping is fast and reliable and is usually free when you spend over $100! Hope this helps
