Why does my dog still smell?

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

I'm feeding her Iams, which was recommended by my vet. She is 100% healthy, she's spayed,Interceptor and Advantage Protected, no ear mites, no infections, no impacted anal glands, but she still stinks. Its not an overwhelming smell, but its defintely a "smell" if you pet her alot, your hands will smell like her. We have another dog, and she does not smell nearly the same as the other dog. She's about three if that matters. So, could this just be her own individual smell? It doesnt bother me, I just want to make sure its normal for some dogs to be more "fragrant" than others.
She is some sort of long haired beagle mix. Her face looks like a Beagle, but her body is identical to a mini. Collie.

You may not be getting her clean enough when you bathe her. I suggest getting a shampoo brush like this one: http://www.pet-super-store.com/html/VO-TOYSVIP-RUBBER-SHAMPOO-BRUSH-W-STRAP.html many places have them, I picked mine up at Target. It gets through the fur and down to the skin to really get them clean (and they enjoy the mini-massage the brush gives them, too). Use a TOP quality, odor eliminating dog shampoo (I like the 3M shampoo-available at Wal-Mart-and the PurePet odor eliminating shampoo-available at PetSmart and via the internet). Also, be sure to be complete with the shampoo…use enough to get the the entire dog lathered up, and then let it sit on the dog for 3-5 minutes. Then: rinse, rinse, rinse! If you leave shampoo residue on the dog, it just attracts dirt and odors. Hope this helps!

Interceptor Question??

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

My vet said to start my puppy on Interceptor and to do it once a month for the rest of her life. I called the pet store where we got her just to be sure that they didn't give it to her yet, since we've only had her for 2 weeks. The pet store said that we need to have a heart worm check before giving it to her…is that true? I'm waiting to give it to her and will call the vet tomorrow, but I'm just wondering what others have heard.
In response to the "vet tech." : My question states that I am going to speak with my vet and I would have today, but it is Sunday. Besides all of that….you said "It doesn't matter how long you ve had her.
What matters is how old she is.
If she is over 8 weeks it is safe to administer."….well, I think it DOES matter how long I've had her since if the pet store did give it to her 3 weeks ago, I don't want to give it to her today. Since it is a once a month thing. That is why I called the pet store to see if they had given it to her…the vet would not know that…make sense now??? ;)

Why are you referring to a pet store rather than your vet?
Your vet and its staff have a veterinary education and years of experience behind them.
Your vet is following the best current recommendations for quality health care.

Interceptor is safe for puppies over 8 weeks old and should be started as soon as they are 8 weeks.
It take 6 months for a heart worm to develop and demonstrate a positive result on a heart worm test.
That is why no test is needed and the sooner protection is provided the safer the pet is.

It doesn't matter how long you ve had her.
What matters is how old she is.
If she is over 8 weeks it is safe to administer.

Should Interceptor be bought only at a Vet or Pet Pharmacy to be of good quality?

Does any body know where to buy Interceptor at a low price and still be good?

Interceptor is a heartworm preventative. Before starting on monthly heartworm prevention, all dogs must test negative for heartworm. This is why Interceptor, Heartgard, and the like, are prescription products. It is not legal to sell it without a prescription, so anyone who sells it without one is doing so illegally. I would only trust medication obtained through my vet or a reputable pharmacy.

I have a German Shepperd that is 60lbs. and a Husky that is 40lbs. I forgot to buy the heart …..read on?

worm medicine for the husky. The Interceptor is for 51-100lbs. Will it harm her if I give her a pill or should I cut it and give to her. This might sound like a silly question, but I just don't want to harm my dog. Any suggestion will be appreaciated.p.s. I order their medicine through 1-800 pet meds so it will take about a week or so for me to get hers. Thank you.
By the way Shelby is 11 months (Husky).

Hi, I had to do this myself. It is fine to split the pill in half and give it to him. you can use the other half next month. By then your other pills will be in, and then no worries mon. The extra dose won't hurt your dog, but this way you stay within the weight range and you get an extra month! Thanks for being such a great owner! Have a great holiday- dd

What is the best site for getting Advantik or Sentinel for my dog? Interceptor will work too instead?

You can find links to all kinds of pet needs, including medications, where you can buy online and save money at http://www.factipedia.com/pets

I buy flea & tick prevention, heartworm, and anti-shedding products through that site at discount prices all the time.
