If Petco overdosed or could have overdosed your dog on heartworm medicine would you sue?

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

I am so pissed. I got heartworm meds from luv my pet at petco right after I got her shots. I had my 3lb jack russell in my arms, ( she is a mini jack ) and I had her paperwork and her weight. they asked if i wanted to buy the interceptor and ASKED all the info. They gave me a 6 month supply of pills in a sealed envelope with the pills in a package inside. I went to give her the 1st dose today and opened it up and couldn’t get the pill to pop out the package so i flipped it over and in small print it said for dogs 11 to 25 lbs… WTF.

I am not one to sue but giving your dog medicine 6 times greater than the dose she needs could of been BAD or fatal..and they are prescription …so how could they miss that.

What would you do ?

sorry to ask this again lol.. I just think of my little kids if their puppy would of got sick or died.

I would talk to someone Diva, I have a very close relationship with my Vet she is close with the shelter here if you get a dog from the shelter here (this is a small town it only costs $15.00 to adopt one) Dr. Peggy fixes a male for $15.00 she loves the animals and is very kind. Everyone in her office double checks everything. I take Yasha to her for all medicines but she does not do training so I do take her to Petco for training and I had a wonderful experience there. If you look on your receipt there should be a number to call, I have had to call a couple of times because they charged the full price and they told me that I had a 15% credit and it never showed up and they were always very helpful and even gave me an additional 5% credit. Why don’t you try calling them. We do not have heart-worm here in Nevada, so I do not have to worry about it, but when I was in Utah I know we had chewable tablets and for my smaller dog my Vet there had me break them in half, is it possible for you to break yours into fourths? I really do understand you concern. When my son was 3 months old the pharmacy gave him medicine that said 1 tsp. every bowl movement and when I gave it to him he turned blue. We rushed him to the hospital it was supposed to say 1mil. every bowl movement. I could have killed him. I was so upset, they have a hard job. I was just so happy that my son was alive and I thank God that he turned blue before I killed him. God works in strange ways. I am glad you caught the mistake and your puppy is alive.

Veterinary expense poll…how much was your last vet visit?

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

I thought it might be interesting to compare veterinary expenses. We all see so many Q’s here complaining about vet costs.
So, for me, I took my two dogs in yesterday. Total cost, $204.09. That included exam for both dogs, 3-year rabies and DHLPP for each dog, and 6 months of Interceptor (heartworm/intestinal worm prevention) for each dog. I live in the greater Cincinnati area.
That doesn’t count the other 6 mo. of Interceptor per dog, and also flea/tick control for the year, but I think that’s a pretty good deal, myself.

Anyway, if you’d like to share, please give the cost of the visit, the pets involved, and what was done. I’d like to see the general area in which you live, since that has a huge part to play in living expenses! Thanks!
Very interesting answers so far!

KaRayZee…you got the best deal…helps to trade labor for a discount eh? :)
MemphisBelle…I am so sorry for your poor Boris. And Becky. What a sad story.

Thank you to everyone who has answered.
I’m glad I didn’t get any answers like ‘I never take my pet to the vet’ although we’ve seen plenty of those here on YA.
I guess we’ve determined what we already all know: owning pets requires a pretty serious financial commitment. It’s a shame not everybody who has animals understands this. Congratulations to all for providing proper care and treatment to your critters. This isn’t the sort of question that there is really a ‘best’ answer for, but…

The following reply is by : Memphis Belle :
2003 - Boris was diagnosed with aggressive skin cancer & referred to the Animal Health Trust, to see a canine oncologist.
£2,000 for the initial surgery + £400 for the first chemotherapy.
Next three months, blood tests at the local vet prior to three chemotherapy treatments, £1,200.

Boris three weeks an inpatient due to complications £2,000.

2004 - Boris, first six month check & scan, £400. Second check up £400.
Becky, skin cancer operation, £200.

2005 - Becky, pyometra, emergency spay £800. Boris two x check ups £800. Boris surgery to remove lumps, £400.

2006 - Boris, two x check ups £800, otherwise a good year!

2007 - Boris operation to remove a mass, taken back to Animal Health Trust, diagnosed with multiple inoperable internal tumors. Later diagnosed with DCM by a cardiologist. £1,500 & £750.00. Boris was euthanized on 2/02/07.
Becky taken to the vet as she had developed a cough when excited. Died within 24 hours of DCM, congestive heart failure.

2008 Tori, TPLO surgery £4,000.

2009, so far so good………
Annual booster for JJ free {the veterinary practice has a booster club, pay for the puppy injections & the boosters are free & Tori’s was £20.00 {Midlands, UK}

Is there a cheap version of Frontline?

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Well, for us humans it seems as if there's the expensive name-brand drug, and then there's the cheaper generic, but does-the-same-thing drug. Is there anything like this for pets? It's time for me to start my puppy on Frontline and Interceptor, but the cost is steep for that stuff. So is there a website I can go to and get generic versions of this stuff that'll be just as effective?

The following reply is by : clarity :
I believe you get what you pay for, and I'd stick with either Frontline or Advantage. If you will look online, you can check prices on them and sometimes get very good deals. I usually order online because the prices are better than at my vet's. Many times, the shipping is free. You really should do the best for your dog, though.

Where can I get cheaper pet meds?

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

I need a year supply of Novartis Interceptors for 50-100 pound dogs from a reliable website that sells them at a less expensie rate.

There are lots of reliable sites to chose from. I would definitely check out this website http://pet-supplies-reviewed.blogspot.com. It's got lots of great info on what to think about and where to look to find the best products for your pet.

Pet Insurance Companies… How To Choose?

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I have 2 pure breed golden retreiver puppies (females), they are about 6 months old. I called the vet to look into pricing for spaying and microchiping them and it was about $500 each. I also have them on advantix and interceptor medications for fleas and ticks and heartworm protection. We have already paid a lot of money for their shots and they will be recieving their 3rd round in January as well which another $135. So I have been looking into pet insurance. I need to have one that covers spaying and vet visits and medicines as well. I have found a few, but would like some opinions from people who have the insurance as this is my first time buying this type.

I would like a lower deductible and co-pay (80-100%) if possible. I know you pay out of pocket first and then they reimburse you.

I want the best treatment for my puppies, but I also need to be realistic in monthly premiums.

I would like to hear any storys or recommendations on companies. Thank you for your time!

The answer is provided by :
Shannon :

Whoa! $500 per dog for microchipping is just wrong! You can easily call your local humane society to find out about their events in which you can get your dogs microchipped for about $25 each!

Since I have a cousin breed to the Golden (I have Labs), I have a lot of experience with the medications and health issues of larger breed sporting dogs. :)

For medications, I highly recommend EntirelyPets.com. This is the best place we have found online as it is both the cheapest and most reliable. They also offer heavy discounts and free shipping on most of their orders. It beats getting meds at the store or the vet!

As for insurance, we don't believe in it for our breed. Why? Well, most insurance only covers basic stuff like shots and the price isn't worth it. Sure, it is great to have "just in case" but did you know that most pet insurance companies will not cover most health problems with larger breed dogs such as hip dysplasia, knee problems, eye problems, etc? You would be actually losing money with the amount you are paying to insurance.

Now, if you just want the peace of mind - just in case there is an accident, then I would recommend looking at http://www.petsbest.com/

Best of luck with those Goldens! :)

Can a 4 month old collie use interceptor and advocate for heartworm prevention?

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Vet gave pet Interceptor Yellow at last visit, and one tablet to take in a month. Since then have bought Advocate which also claims to prevent heartworms. It is time for the Interceptor, but applied the Advocate last week. Worried about the two together causiing her problems.

The question was answered by :

why would your dog need two treatments? call the vet

Why is my dog acting so odd lately?

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

For the past few weeks, my dog has been acting strangely sometimes, usually in the evenings. Sometimes he will refuse to come in from the yard (always at night), cowering under a bush. Sometimes he will seem afraid to come into the living room, hiding in my bedroom. Nothing has changed in his environment (no new people, no new pets, no new furniture) and it doesn’t happen every day. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

He is a 1 1/2 neutered male mix. He’s current on all his shots and is on Interceptor for heartworm and Frontline for fleas.

We are currently living with my mom and her 4 animals, and I’ve been really tense all this month, waiting for the results of a job interview, but I got the job yesterday and he acted strangely today still.

The answer is provided by :
JenGirl001 :

Maybe he’s feeling insecure…you should try to show him that it’s okay to come out from whereever he’s hiding, bribe him with a tasty snack..bribery is OKAY..if he seems ill or still acts strangely, call the vet with your concerns.Good luck!

heartworm prevention?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Has anybody heard if the pro heart6 will ever be available again? I think they should leave it up to the pet owner if they want to use it. we used it on our dog when it first came out every year until unfortunatly it was recalled. now we gotta use interceptor once a month, even with the stickers for the calandar we still forget to give the pill on the right day sometimes.

The question was answered by :
Sarah W :

ProHeart 6 was taken off the market b/c it was causing serious side effects in animals and sometimes even death. That's why your veterinarian doesn't offer it. No matter how much the pet owner wants to use something that is likely to hurt their pet in the long run, the vet probably isnt going to give it to them. So really all you can do is pay a little more attention to the calendar.

1-800 petmeds?????

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

My dog is on his 2nd month of interceptor and for the last week has had diarrhea. I took him to a new vet and was told he has hookworm! Interceptor is supposed to be one of the better ones. I was asked where i got it and said 1800-petmeds. Was told that they get their drugs from foreign countries and you will never know what it is. That perhaps its effectiveness is changed or even ingredients….I was mortified as a new pet owner. I called 1800-petmeds and they actually said if i fax a copy of diagnosis and bills then i will get reimbursed. I wont use the rest of the meds from there but should i file lawsuit?
i cant say that the new vet has a vested interest because he lowered all of his med prices to compete with online companies like that…..the other vet i saw did make a profit however!

The answer is provided by :
brodyburks :

You're going to have to prove a whole lot more than that. You realize that your Vet has a pretty vested interest in telling you that, right? Vets make MUCH more money off selling you medications than they do off of the visits. So, absent some actual proof that the medication is bogus, you're not even going to get a lawyer to take the case.
