What is the best flea preventative?

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

I have a two year old female cat. She goes outside on a leash while she is supervised and it is flea season now. I used to use Frontline Plus and it seemed like every other time she had an allergic reaction. Her skin would be a little red and flaky and it healed in a few days. I don't want to do that to her again but this stuff worked wonders.

Does anybody have a better experience with Advantage? I do not want to try Revolution as I have heard many bad outbreak stories about it.

Also, I phoned Banfield and their single doses of Advantage are $13.95 a dose (I do not want to get the 4-pack right now because I want to see if it will be okay)…can I just go and get it? He took my pet's information so he knows that I take my pets to that vet. I shouldn't have to bring her in, should I? The only reason that I am going to bring her in is to weigh her because she is on a diet right now and I gotta make sure I get the right weight for the Advantage doses.

Sorry this is long.
She doesn't currently have fleas but I don't want her to get them. When I rescued her she had fleas AND tapeworm so no more of that! And no, I do not currently have a dog.

I use to work for Banfield (they are overpriced!) Frontline seemed to be the best selling because it worked. However, if you cat has had a reaction to it, you can always try Advantage. You don't have to bring your pet in but you do need to have an approximate weight b/c it can make your pet sick if you give them too much.

is frontline plus vets give you for fleas the same exact product they sell at petstores?

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

I bought advantage 2 weeks ago and I saw a flea on my dog today. I'm planning to buy fronline next time. But is frontline the same exact product vets give you the same one they sell at pet stores? Is frontline good according to most people?

It's the same, although you'l probably find it cheaper online like on websites ike 1800 petmeds.com. Success really varies, works with 1 of my dogs, but not with the other 2. Have had much better results with advantix (or advantage). If the dog has a ot of fleas, it might take more than 1 mo. to realy get rid of them.

How would you rate Joe’s Pet Meds compared to CanadaVet-?

I want to buy Frontline Plus for dogs. Is Joe's Pet Meds a good source compared to CanadaVet?

The question was answered by :

I placed an order w/them on 04/24/08. I wrote them and asked for a tracking number, which they did not provide. (FYI, they are in Australia; I am in the US.) I wrote and asked them by when I should receive my order. Answer? 05/05/08. Today is 05/05/08 and the order has not been recd. Based upon this experience, I would not do business w/them and will file a cc chargeback. You make your own decision.

Ordering Heartgard Online – How do you know it’s NOT counterfeit?

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

So, apparently I don't read enough, and just recently I found an article about counterfeit Frontline Plus (flea & tick medicine) being sold. I have been purchasing mine off of eBay and when I looked at the website, the ones I had purchased matched the description of the counterfeit meds. I originally thought the packaging looked different just because it was from Australia. (here's the website if you want to check it out: http://yosemite.epa.gov/R10/ECOCOMM.NSF/webpage/How+to+Identify+Counterfeit+Pet+Pesticides)

SO, onto my question – I purchased Heartgard Plus from a pet supply website:

http://www.petsuppliesnet.com/shop.htm

How do I know that these are not counterfeit? I cannot find a website that explains what differences to look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)

That's the problem, you can't know it's counter fit. I saw a show on Dateline a while back. These people are so good that even a doctor , pharmacist, and a scientist could not tell the difference between the counter fit and the real meds. That show was on human drugs.

Many people are having a difficult time with Frontline and Frontline Plus. Be sure that you treated your home with a reliable product. Also be sure that you're not bathing any of your pets 3 days before or 3 days after application. Bathing rinses the oils from their skin not letting the product work effectively. If still no results you should try another flea product for them. Advantix for dogs, Advantage or Revolution for cats. Unfortunately Capstars only work for the live fleas on the animal and it only lasts for 24 hours. We use Capstars at the clinic I work at to treat patients with fleas while in the hospital. And send home topical with the client. Advantix is for dogs ONLY! (if you have cats in your household you need to apply it to the dog with out the cats having contact for about 8-10 hours) Advantix does fleas & ticks. Advantage is used for cats and treats ONLY fleas. Revolution is a fairly new product that treats fleas, intestinal parasites, earmites, and is kind of effective against ticks. If you're still not entirely sure about your flea situation contact your vet and ask what they recommend and explain your problem. Hopefully that helps.

Joes pet meds on line?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I recently purchased Frontline plus for dogs..Its took 2 weeks to get here, and came from Australia..Im thinking it may be a phoney product, due to the fact that its not working on my dogs..They still are getting fleas. Has anyone ever ordered from them? They are about half the cost as in the store…Please let me know if you have, and if their products work for you..

i havent and it is not good to order pet supplies from out of the country because its hard to check their credability. Try taking your pet to the groomer and getting him flea dipped. This helps and you wont need the frontline (which is considerably cheap to be real)

Equi-spot for tick control?

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Just flipping through the new Practical Horseman, and came across the Equi-Spot ad.
My horse has Lyme Disease, and was treated. I am doing my best to keep him from getting reinfected.. which I imagine would bring his titer right back up again regardless of treatment.
Now, this is from the same company that makes Biospot. Biospot scares the hell out of me – I've seen pets die from the stupid stuff. However, tick control products for horses seem to be few and far between…
Has anyone had any experience with Equi-Spot, or heard anything about it? Possible reactions?
I used Frontline Plus for Canines in spray form last year – just spritzed it on his legs, and it did a decent job. However, if I can protect my whole horse, that would be a good thing. :)

I use equi spot every summer. I think it says only to put on every two – three weeks and is VERY effective. I must say I never got one tick.

You will want to put it on after you ride. Because your not supposed to touch where you have put it. Its scary but humans cant touch it. But its very effective. You put it down their back line, legs, etc. VERY useful.

Is there a generic version of the pet med called FrontLine Plus for my dog?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

I need it for my little shitsu and am totally unable to pay the vet prices or some of the prices the on-line stores have.
Thanks in advance

This is one of the best questions ever!

There's no reason a generic wouldn't work as well…and now you have me wondering why it hasn't been available.

The cost is insane for those of us having to pinch pennies right now.

Found tick on the back of my dogs head by petting him, was grossed out but sprung to action?

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

With tweezers i pulled, he was engorged. It was a light brown tick…looks exactly like a sunflower seed color. The spot where i pulled it from is hard and red. I looked at the tick and it looks like everything is in tact. I put vaseline over the wound…to be honest from panic state and dont know what it would do but did anyways. I saved the tick. I am going to the vet tomorrow morning. how long could this have been on him? Funny thing is that he was due for his next dose of frontline plus TODAY!

The question was answered by :
millypeed :

It probably wasn't on him for long, or you would have found it sooner, the hard red spot is normal and will go in a few days, if it gets redder or a lot bigger then you should get it looked at, as it could be infected, but as you are at the vets tomorrow you could get it looked at then.
I use Frontline on my two Labs, and if they do get a tick on them they are easily removed as they start to die as soon as they bite into the skin. Nasty little critters, luckily we don't get many where we are.

Vet N Pet Direct – anyone ever use this website???

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

My friend gave me a website where you can purchase Frontline Plus and Heartguard at a much cheaper rate then at the vet's office. Has anyone ever used products from this site or know anything about it. I don't want to purchase this stuff if it's old, expired, tampered with, ect. I want the best for my kids.

Here's the website if anyone wants to check it out:
