Dog–A Broken Leg an Emergency?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

We’ve been taking our pets to the same vet for 16 years–since he started his practice, so he fondly thinks of us as his long-time regulars and goes beyond the call of duty when caring for our pets. For instance, we have a 10-year old diabetic dog who had to be admitted recently and the vet went in a couple of times during the night to check up on him without charging us extra. But he recently hired a receptionist that we dislike. She always balks when we need to get out pets in for something urgent–like today–and has a tendency to make a faux pas like the time she called to see if our cat, who’d been diagnosed with a terminal disease, was better.

Anyway, I called today, hoping to get our dog in, because we think he broke his leg. She gave me a hassle, said they were already double-booked and couldn’t see him today. She told me to bring him in tomorrow morning. I’m upset about this, because I feel that a broken leg is an emergency that should be treated immediately. He’s dragging his back leg and his foot is swollen up.

He has neuropathy from his diabetes and is semi-blind, and he’s not very steady on his legs anymore. When he was going out this morning, he fell on the last two steps, and has been dragging his back leg ever since. The bone is not coming through the skin, but he’s in pain.

We’ve put an ace wrap on him and gave him some Deramaxx that we had on hand.

But what do you think? Is a broken leg an emergency?
Thanks for all of your responses. It turns out that the leg wasn’t broken, but the foot was sprained. Our dog is on medication and is already doing better. I talked to the vet and found out that he had no idea that I’d called to get our dog in. He was upset about it. The next time an emergency comes up, I will take the pet out there directly or insist on speaking to the vet if they claim they can’t get the pet in. The receptionist’s response was ridiculous, but the vet is great and we trust him and intend to stay with him.

In short yes a broken leg should be seen by a vet as soon as possible. The leg must be stabilized (splint/sling/wrap) and pain medication needs to be administered. Plus your vet should check for signs of shock etc.

The actual surgery to fix the leg may be put off until the next day (say if the dog comes in at 2 am and I don’t have a tech there to help with surgery I’ll wait to fix the leg)…But the dog needs to be seen ASAP.

Also…please tell your vet about his/her receptionist. I had an awful receptionist and didn’t know it for about 3 months because she always put on her best efforts if I was around. I assure you your vet doesn’t know she’s behaving like this!

What Could be done with my dog who the vet says to be aggressive?

Friday, October 17th, 2008

so i took my 85lb 11month old boxer/lab MoonRock to the vet to get his x-rays done because he was limping too much. MonRock n i had a really bad experience. the vet didnt even pet MoonRock inside the examination room and when he wanted to change collars on him to take him in, of course my dog refused (he usually doesnt do this). It looked like the vet was afraid of my dog, and he immediately asked the nurse to bring the muzzle- Which made MoonRock even more upset. The vet said "oh this is an agressive dog. this is a warning" and i just got so heated because MoonRock is the sweetest dog ever. everyone in my neighborhood loves him and he’s never acted this way. Personally i dont think it was moonrocks fault. So, MoonRock was still growling at him even though I was the one that had to palce it on him. Finally, the vet pulled him into the other room, and moonrock starts to fight back. He asked me to pet/hold him while he sedated him. I really didnt want to see that, but it happened so quick I couldnt even leave the room. When i come back to get the results, the vet says he has a "mild" hip displasia. He says he cant really tell now because its too early. so he prescribed deramaxx. I asked to get the x-ray taken home so i can get 2nd opinion but they insisted to keep them for records. It’s been like 5 days, and i still see my dog limping. Now, MoonRock barks for everything or anything! Ive never seen him so angry with his surroundings. He’s usually the sweet big pup that throws himself on the floor for anyone to pet him. Now he’s just growls at all the cars that pass by, or barks for any little noise he may hear from people that are taking walks outside. I don’t know what I should do about this. What do you think or suggest? Please help. Thanks
MoonRock is neutered and he is up to date with all ofhis vaccinations.

Poor mondog, its not his fault. He is in pain

Any time a dog is in pain/scared they are put in fight or flight mode. Since your dog feels defensless because he can’t walk right. Thus taking out his flight. The only mode left is fight.

Take the dog to an different vet. That vet you went to sounds cold, mean, and only in it for the money.

Sooner the dog gets better sooner he will return to his sweet self. Good luck.

Has anyone given Deramaxx to their pet, and he-she developed incontinence?

Friday, February 8th, 2008

If you have had this problem, did the situation improve after stopping the use of Deramaxx?

The answer is provided by :
Kate A :

I have put hundreds of animals on deramaxx and never had anyone report incontinence.

If your animal is lame from a neurological disease rather than an orthopaedic disease, it could be due to a progression of the neuro symptoms.

Rather than taking him off of the deramaxx, talk to your vet about other causes: bladder infection, bladder stones, hormonal, etc.

pet has problems with her hair were trying to figure out if its a side effect of medication or something else?

Friday, December 14th, 2007

She is an australain shepard about 11 years old (in human years not dog) shes taking deramaxx and M-Thyrozine, I looked up side effects of them online but didnt see anything about hair growth. Shes been taking them for atleast 2 years. My mom gets her hair cut about twice a year cause she sheds soo much hair in the house. She never had this problem before but since she last had her hair cut its been growing back strange. She has spots were its not growing and spots where its growing long but somewhat thin. This is only on her back and part of her side, on the rest of her body is growing back like normal. My mom thought it might be from her laying on concrete in her office but wouldnt make sense cause she doesnt lay on her back.

Have you had her checked out by the vet? Sounds like fungus or something that she could have picked up at the groomer…

How much are arthritis meds for pets-dogs?

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

My almost 10 yo choc lab needs something for arthritis. Vet suggested Rhymidal (sp) but I've read a lot on here about Deramaxx. What is the average cost of these meds per month?
Thanks!

I have used both on my dogs & found Deramaxx is better, but more expensive. I just picked up 45 Deramaxx today from my vet & it cost me $103.50. The Rimidyl I was giving my a whole pill a day.The Deramaxx is 100mg pill & I give my dog 1/2 pill a day. I think I was paying around $1.50 per pill for the Rimidyl. You can go on line & simply type in Deramaxx & hit search. You will need a perscription from your vet to get either medicine on line.

Dog owners who have pets taking Deramaxx for arthritis, what kind of blood work does your dog have?

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

my 171/2 year old lab has been taking Deramaxx for 6 weeks prior he was taking Remadyl for 4 weeks he has a vet appt this week.they are doing blood work for his liver but being on deramaxx now shouldnt that include kidney test also?

The question was answered by :
Pamela P :

what the will do is a general health panel that will test all their kidney, liver, heart and everything else.

they will also do a complete blood count to make sure that her white cells and platlets show that everything is working fine.

They willdraw around 5-10 cc of blood depending on what vet you take your dog to.

I used to do them all the time.
