Arthritis in old cat?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Recently, my twelve year old cat was limping so I took him to the vet. After an X-ray, they said he has arthritis. They gave him Cosequin (pill) and Derm Caps (liquid) to give him everyday. I gave both to him on his food everyday, but he soon started throwing up. I started giving it to him every other day, which has been fine, but I’ve noticed his personality is changing. Instead of being easy going and willing to be held and petted, he is walking around wide eyed and meowing all the time. He is much more active than he has ever been, even as a younger cat. Could this be caused by this medicine, if so, what else can I give him to help with his arthritis?

The answer is provided by :

Talk to your vet about whether or not s/he would be okay with you mixing the Cosequin with water and giving it to him with a syringe. If you could get him to take it this way and not feed him for about an hour or so before or after, it may settle a little better. It may also help to divide it into two doses a day. Cosequin is a great supplement that works well, as it’s a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin. It worked wonders for my 14 year old when he was diagnosed with arthritis. The change in behavior could be a sign that he’s still experiencing pain from the arthritis, and getting him to a full dose of the Cosequin may help with that. Derm caps is typically used to treat skin problems. If he doesn’t have dry skin, you might ask about removing it so he’s not getting so many things at once. Or, you may be able to switch to a food containing Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Switching to a wet food diet and adding cool mist humidifiers to the home can also help with dry skin. Again, please speak with your vet before doing any of these things. I’ve had cats for many years, but am nowhere near as educated on the matter as a vet.

6 3-4 mo large male pure-bred GSD w- huge ears not standing yet, any experience out there?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Currently have an 80 lb male 6 3/4 month pure-bred GSD which huge ears. They have been up and down since about 4 months of age. Once teething ended and adult teeth were in we went back to the breeder to tape them up to help give them some time to form the cartilage. The tape came off after 10 days and seemed like they were a little stonger and headed in the right direction. He has been on Pet Tabs Plus and Cosequin since 4 months of age.

Over the past 2 weeks since the tape has been off they are quite sporadic. Right ear up all morning, then left is up, then tilted, then both up. It seems to me they are both down more often than not. I assume that due to his size and giant satellite dishes that the standard ears up by 6 month rule doesnt apply and it will just take extra time.

I am looking for anyone with past experience with very large male GSDs w/ huge ears and their stories of when they eventually came up or anyones thoughts/ideas.

Thanks!

The following reply is by : Curtis M :
As a general rule, ears that stand before teething, will stand again after teething should they fall. The ears should be up by now…you can try taping again but I’m not optomistic. 80lbs at 6 months = GSD look alike, I don’t care how much you spent or what paperwork you have, 80lbs is the weight an adult male should be, not a puppy. You got swindled by a crappy breeder. I’m not at all surprised the ears aren’t up. I also won’t be surprised in 2 years when you come back asking questions about hip dysplasia. If I were you I’d look over the puppy contract you signed and pray there’s a money back claus about pups who’s ears don’t stand. I wouldn’t even want a replacement from a breeder who produces 80lbs 6 month old pups…

PET ALLERGIES:Overweight Maltese with Allergies & Arthritis: pet nurse marie maltese help ;?

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

I hardly know where to start. My 8 1/2 year old Maltese has so many problems. She is overweight (14 lbs.),
has allergies (scratching and chewing her feet and legs all the time) and she limps and can hardly climb her doggie stairs (arthritis according to the vet). Also she seems to have no energy. She is now eating Nutro-Natural Choice (1/4 cup twice a day and Blue Dog treats (2 a day). I have also been giving her a supplement called Lean Dog hoping it will help with her weight. For the last couple of weeks she has been on antibiotics and Temaril-P. She is some better now but I hate to keep her on these. As far as her food I have had her on several different brands in the last year or so (Van Patton-Natural Balance and also Eagle Pak-Holistic) with no difference in her scratching and chewing. As far as her arthritis I have been giving her Cosequin-DS. Last year I had her on Nzymes supplements for most of the year but this didn’t help either. Thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer. She means so much to us.

I sure do understand your problem…I had another Maltese with the same problem…… So many write to me with similar problems… Here is what I would do for your gal:

** Buy some Acidophilus 1 billion CFUs – can be found at most human Health food stores: Give this baby 1/2 per day of the Acidophilus/
All Natural and safe Probiotic… It will help with Yeast that may be in his blood and intestines. VERY common….
Give her 1/2 per day for at least 2 months or even 3 months…
VERY low cost and SAFE….. ALL Natural ….. good for your Belly too! ( this will help with weight and itching/chewing)

Next, slowly take this kid off your dog food and USE this one : SoJo dog food/ All YOU do is add lightly cooked meat…. VERY close to home cooking / just 1/4 cup in am and 1/4 cup in PM>>>>>>
EXCELLENT for dogs with allergies and hot spots….

Do 1/4 your food and 1/4 the new food for 3 weeks….AFTER that, then go to 100% the new SoJO food.
They will send SoJO to your door and free shipping…
Slowly change over so you don’t get loose stools.

HERE is the sojo link: AGAIN, all you add is fresh lightly cooked meat.
