I really do not like the idea of the ingredients in heartworm and want to know which is the safest and do I have to give every month?

The individual properties of each medication is something you need to discuss with your vet. It is very important to avoid ivermectin based medications if your dog is a member of the herding group of breeds, especially if is a collie related breed, like a border or a sheltie. They can carry a defective gene called the MDR1 gene that can cause them to die from use of ivermectin based drugs. They can be tested for the gene, but it is just as easy to use a non-ivermectin drug for herding breeds since there are good alternatives.
