Pet Insurance Companies… How To Choose?

I have 2 pure breed golden retreiver puppies (females), they are about 6 months old. I called the vet to look into pricing for spaying and microchiping them and it was about $500 each. I also have them on advantix and interceptor medications for fleas and ticks and heartworm protection. We have already paid a lot of money for their shots and they will be recieving their 3rd round in January as well which another $135. So I have been looking into pet insurance. I need to have one that covers spaying and vet visits and medicines as well. I have found a few, but would like some opinions from people who have the insurance as this is my first time buying this type.

I would like a lower deductible and co-pay (80-100%) if possible. I know you pay out of pocket first and then they reimburse you.

I want the best treatment for my puppies, but I also need to be realistic in monthly premiums.

I would like to hear any storys or recommendations on companies. Thank you for your time!

Whoa! $500 per dog for microchipping is just wrong! You can easily call your local humane society to find out about their events in which you can get your dogs microchipped for about $25 each!

Since I have a cousin breed to the Golden (I have Labs), I have a lot of experience with the medications and health issues of larger breed sporting dogs. :)

For medications, I highly recommend EntirelyPets.com. This is the best place we have found online as it is both the cheapest and most reliable. They also offer heavy discounts and free shipping on most of their orders. It beats getting meds at the store or the vet!

As for insurance, we don't believe in it for our breed. Why? Well, most insurance only covers basic stuff like shots and the price isn't worth it. Sure, it is great to have "just in case" but did you know that most pet insurance companies will not cover most health problems with larger breed dogs such as hip dysplasia, knee problems, eye problems, etc? You would be actually losing money with the amount you are paying to insurance.

Now, if you just want the peace of mind - just in case there is an accident, then I would recommend looking at http://www.petsbest.com/

Best of luck with those Goldens! :)
