what tests are normally done after melanoma is diagnosed?
I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma about a mth and a half ago, my dermatologist recommended that I see an oncologist to have some blood work and a chest x ray done. The oncologist has done the blood work and chest x ray, and thursday i am having a sentinel node biopsy done, the doc is also recommending a pet scan be done. what are they looking for, did some of my labs come back abnormal, or are the docs being safe? I have read several articles about snb and pet scan, just wanted to see if i could get some more info…..thanks

All of the tests you mentioned are routinely done for people who are diagnosed with melanoma. The doctors are being safe. They are going to look at everything to make sure the melanoma has not spread (that is what the lymph node biopsy and the PET scan are for). The doctors will probably want you to get blood tests and chest x-rays on a routine basis for several years. Do not hesitate to ask them any questions – make a list if you have to. You can call them about your lab results and ask if they are normal. It may put your mind at ease.
