Can I give my dog over the counter pain medicine for hip pain?
Is tylenol, ibuprophen, or naproxin okay to give a dog for pain? If so, which one is best and how much?
The answer is provided by :
april :
Buffered aspirin, tylenol, then ibuprofen in that order of safeness. Tylenol IS NOT poisonous! They are dangerous to cats, however.
EDIT: They ARE NOT toxic to dogs! People if you're gonna answer questions, at least do a little research if you don't for sure know the answer! I've had a vet tell me to give a pup with a broken, bleeding tooth children's tylenol for pain. I've had a vet tell me to give buffered aspirin to an achy older dog. I've never had to give ibuprofen. But why don't you guys look it up??
EDIT: I'm pretty certain a vet knows more than a vet tech. I called e vet for the broken tooth, children's tylenol. I called my personal vet for other. I trust my vet's knowledge. My mom has a poodle she's been giving baby aspirin to for couple years. He's fine. Why don't you go online to Dr. Mike's site and argue with him? He's never given any advice that I've been able to prove him wrong on. Everyone can believe what they want, after all, this is YA, not dog experts.

This is a question for the vet. Don't give your dog any of these without consulting your vet first.

Please don't risk the health of your dog - your vet will give you an accurate answer. There are too many ignorant people on here who are happy to give you any answer at all so that they can get points….

If you have to give your dog over the counter medicine, your best bet is probably aspirin. Get some the low-dose baby aspirin and only give one per day. If this doesn't help manage the pain, you should take your dog to the vet for some specially formulated dog medicine.

Tylenol and ibuprofen are toxic to dogs. I'm not sure what naproxin is but I doubt it would help. If you think your dog needs something for pain, you need to talk with your vet. He/she can prescribe something that is safe.
Edit:
Vets do occasionally recommend low dose aspirin but it's not good for long term use. It can actually cause the cartilage in their joints to break down. It should not be used for longer than a day or two.

All the meds you mention can be dangerous to give dogs. Aspirin is fairly safe but can be dangerous if certain othe medical conditions are present. I'd call my ver first.
For chronic hip pain, I'd give daily Glucosamine, You can get it at the pet store and long term use is often very beneficial.
My elderly cat has been on it for several years and can still outrun the dog.

NO!!!! none of these are safe to give a dog..they are toxic. Asprin is sometimes considered safe for dogs but never administer without consulting with your vet first. he can advise if it is safe for your dog and in what dosage….Never go by dosages found on the internet!!
*****April H, Tylenol, Ibuprophen, Naproxin and all like drugs ARE toxic to dogs!!! These products can cause serious kidney/liver damage. You need to be more aware of your advise before you give it..giving such incorrect advise could kill someones dog. If ANY vet ever said to give a dog ANY of these products even childrens version I wouldn't be using that vet again and would really question their credability. I havve never ever known of any vet that even hinted that these products are safe to be given to any dog. These OTC meds are also on the toxic product list for dogs (which just was sent around to vets in the past week)Do you even have a clue as to the number of times vets see dogs that have been given these products and have become seriously ill???********
